Interior Lighting in Mental Ray

Have you ever had one of those days where you are trying to light a scene in Maya and render in Mental Ray…and you beat your head against the desk until you have a gash across your face? We’ve all been there.

Awhile back I was trying to figure out all of Mental Ray’s complex settings and experiment with lighting an indoor scene. It didn’t go well. That is, until I found this in-depth article by Dagon on Treddi.com who manages to break down the complexities of photons, global illumination, final gather, and even light types in this easy to follow guide (with pictures!).

If you are ever going to step up your game with lighting in Maya, start by reading Dagon’sĀ guide.
